Overnight and throughout the next day they were once again having issues sedating the beast. The goal of that day was to work on extubation. Beckett was not a happy camper having all the tubes back in. He would go from 0 to 60 with agitation. This child was on so much sedation meds but you would never know! They were thinking extubation tomorrow (Friday), but he was so agitated with the vent and everything else looked great that they decided to take it out that afternoon. Woo hoo! Beckett was happy to have it out, but also didn't like the high flow nasal cannula. He started to take his pacifier again but had problems keeping it in. We all kept taking turns being on pacifier duty.
Alex decided to stay with him and help the nurse out since he needed full on attention to be calmed down. I cannot thank my sister for all of her help. She is truly an amazing nurse and aunt. We don't want her to leave! I relieved her early this morning so she could go get some sleep because she was up all night with the beast. When I walked into the room, they had switched his nasal cannula to a lower flow and Beckett already seemed way more comfortable. The nurse (she rocks) had him sitting up more, which he seemed to love! At rounds, they said everything still looks great. Goal is to start weaning everything and start feeds. So at 2 they took out Beckett's intrathoracic lines, which connected to his heart and measured the right and left atrium filling pressures. They also took one chest tube out and his foley. During all that we all went out to dinner at Outback (so daddy could have a steak) thanks to the gift cards people have sent us! Once we got back to the hospital, Beckett was sleeping. The nurse figured out a way to keep Beckett's pacifier in while sleeping. The blanket is tightly wrapped keeping the pacifier in. He slept great. Look at his little non skid hospital socks!!!
She told me once he wakes up, you can hold him....wait WHAT?!?!?! I started to cry. Of course Beckett slept the longest he had in awhile. But his night nurse made it happen!!! It took 3 nurses (his nurse, charge nurse and nurse Aunt Alex) and about 15 minutes of preparing him just for me to hold him! I cried as he was being put into my arms. It was better than the day he was born. I held him for two hours. He was just as happy as I was being in my arms.
This was the best Saturday night of my life. I waited a very long whirlwind 25 days to hold him again. He is just the sweetest and cutest! I love him so much and so thankful my baby was saved. A day has not gone by that I have not thought of his donor family, our new family whether we meet or not. Once we put Beckett back into bed, I saw that his belly looked distended, but it was still felt soft. They did an x-ray around 1:30 and just like they expected it was full of air. Thank goodness! Good night everyone from my resting peaceful angel!
Much Love,
Joe, Taylor, and Beckett
