Our New Normal!

Hi Everyone! Sorry it has been awhile, but I'm so busy with Beckett and staying at a place with no wifi. I am currently writing on my phone and will finish at a Starbucks.  Life is GREAT! I will back up and start where I left off last time, which was the last few days at the hospital...

I spent most of the days doing everything for Beckett. I was feeding every 3-4 hours around the clock, giving him all his meds, changing diapers, holding him, and getting lessons on post transplant life. We also started to look for housing. That was somewhat stressful. The transplant housing the hospital has a deal with was booked. They were willing to convert a regular apartment into a transplant apartment, but when we saw it we did not feel comfortable bringing Beckett there mainly because it was regular housing and not transplant. We went up the street and found another apartment complex but they only had three transplant apartments and they were all occupied. I was bummed because we really liked them! I told our transplant coordinator our issue and she got us in contact with a property manager. He had a town home that was furnished and the owners were willing to accept a 1 month lease! But since it's a town house and we are only renting for a month cable and wifi isn't set up. The property manager gave us a tv and joe hooked up a DVD player for movies. We were actually discharged on Wednesday the 28th of January, but because of the housing situation we wanted to stay another night. On Wednesday we had to pick up all of Beckett's going home medicines. He has 15 medications. So weird when joe and I barely even take aspirin. Then we had to take a test over all the transplant information to see if we were prepared to take him home and we had to practice drawing up his meds. We both passed!

It was weird and anxious knowing it was the last night at the hospital (forever we hope). It was bittersweet. In just a month these people became family. I felt safe there. Even though the beeping monitors annoyed me it was also a safety net. I laid in bed and looked back at our terrifying experience. I will never forget a single day. I looked back and realized the day it all started. Beckett's coloring was off, he was miserable, and he was drenched in sweat. I remember finding the red diaper and going to the first ED. I remember being worried but not that worried. I remember sending Joe home thinking everything was going to be ok. Then I remember watching my son turning purple/blue in the lips needing oxygen while we were in the ambulance. Then I starrted to get scared and I woke Joe up and said "get to Arnold Palmer now." I remember holding my son and saying "stay with me" and "hang in there I'm getting you help." I remember feeling numb as the 4th floor doctor came to me in a panic and told me my baby was very sick as I watched him grasping for a breath. I remember people comforting me while bringing me to the ICU floor. I remember hearing the dr and nurses calling out orders. One was to intubate him and I just lost it. I will never forget Joe walking onto the floor and screaming "what happened?!?!" I won't forget seeing Beckett for the first time intubated and sedated and staying up all night watching his monitor. I won't forget watching them trying to transport him and it not going smoothly. I won't forget Dr. Freedman looking at me and saying I won't let Beckett go unless he is 100% ok. Well, they got him ok but I still worried the whole drive there. He looked so tiny all strapped in on the stretcher. I won't forget getting to Shands and waiting in the waiting room at 3:00 am on Christmas Eve. We met about 5 doctors repeating our story to each one of them. It seems like yesterday finally getting called back to see Beckett in his new room. We went through these huge double doors, down a hallway with these huge glass rooms one after another. Prior to this I have never been on an ICU floor. Since it was the night shift the lights were dimmed and everything was dark besides the glow of the monitors. Our room was at the end of the hall and there was my little precious baby. Once we got through all the questions for admission Joe and I slept for like 2 hours. Then at 7:00 am we started meeting even more people who I now call family. I remember breaking down Christmas morning because I wanted to be home where we were supposed to be and the PA just hugging me. I remember everyday trying to keep Beckett calm. I remember sending him off for the mechanical heart and seeing him after. I'll never forget the sound of the machine working as his heart. I'll ALWAYS remember getting the call and not sleeping that night with my mom and sister. I remember sending him off for his second heart surgery. I'll NEVER forget watching the arrival of his new heart and I'll NEVER forget reading the text IT'S BEATING!!!! And here we are two weeks since that life saving surgery and we are out of here onto the next step of recovery! How lucky are we? How amazing is my son?

Next morning it was surreal saying goodbye to his team. I cannot even explain how amazing they were and how each one gave me their personal number to call with any questions or concerns. They were all SO happy to watch us walk out those doors! We were so excited to have one of our favorite nurses on our last day! She was our first day nurse and last! Here is a picture of Beckett with her!

I can't even put into words how it was walking out of there with Beckett. It was so much better than bringing him home the first time. His adorable fitting onesie was from Aunt Alex and everyone loved it!

I have to admit I thought I was going to be a lot more terrified and nervous than I actually was on his first night home. I just think I was always worried and checking on him even before all this happened. I also keep my PA's words in my head "he isn't in heart failure anymore." I was mostly nervous about his meds! I have 3 charts that I follow for the drug, time, and dose. I only had one mess up the first night! Not bad! I called my transplant coordinator, Kara, right away and she informed what I had to do. She is our lifeline. Beckett gets meds at 0000, 0600, 0800, 0830, 0900, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2030, 2100, and 2200! Now a week later and it is second nature. It gets better over time. Eventually he will only be on a few or so I think.

First night and day in Beckett seemed much happier being free and out of hospital. The next following day he started "talking" again. I was so excited because he was doing that right before all this happened. My days go pretty fast because of all the meds I have to give. He is so good at taking them, however it always seems that he gets into a good sleep when a med is due! Smart little fellow! On Saturday Papa, Aunt Angela and her boyfriend came to see Beckett. They brought us lunch. We put Beckett in the mama roo and he started talking to the little monsters on the mobile! We were laughing and realizing that he can really see now. We then placed him under his play mat and he was talking and hitting and kicking the animals! He does get irritable and it is hard to tell if he is just being a baby or from the weaning of his sedative meds. Sunday my dad gave us play by play of the Superbowl. Congrats to the NE Patriots and #47 who is a high school alumni! So proud to be a SAINT! Monday we went and got Beckett's labs taken, so they could have the results by his appointment on Tuesday. They got him on the first poke and Beckett did great with only one little cry. On Tuesday, we had his first outpatient appointment! He got his vitals taken, which were all within normal range. He now weighs 11.31 and is 23" long. He got an EKG and an ECHO done. He was in great spirits for all of this!!! Kara and his Dr. saw him and thought he looked great and adorable! The only change was the weaning of his sedatives. They are spreading it out a little longer to see if it helps with his irritableness. He still gets a rash and we are still not sure what causes it. Other than that he checked out great that we  don't even have to go back till Monday!!! Great news!!! My baby is truly a miracle! After his outpatient appointment, we had to go back to the 10th floor to have the PA remove the rest of his stitches. Everyone on the 10th floor was so excited to see him! I love visiting everyone on the floor. I keep praying for everyone on that floor. They each hold a special place in my heart. Oliver is still there and I pray for a discharge soon! The baby girl I talked about before is now on the transplant list. I pray for a heart for her and her donor as well.

All the tshirts are starting to come in and we are loving the pictures of people in them! I am trying to reopen the t shirt campaign because I have gotten a few t shirt requests after it has closed. I will let you know when it re opens!  Thanks for all the support!!!

On Wednesday, we got ready for the arrival of Auntie Alex! I picked her up from the airport. Beckett and her were super excited to reunite! On Thursday, Joe spent the day with us!  Joe and I ran a few errands then we had a pj party and rented a movie (I slept through it). I got up early Friday morning, to get my dad, sister, and Grace from the airport. I was so excited to see them. I haven't seen my sister since August!!!! And I was meeting my niece!!!!

Once I got them, we stopped at House of Blues. The night before I got word that Live Nation, who owns House of Blues, was giving Beckett a generous donation. My work family has been beyond supportive. They have touched me and have kept me strong through all of us. True fans of Beckett! I cannot thank them enough! It was so amazing to see some co workers and hug them. It filled my heart up! One server made some special things for Beckett, which you will see soon in the next blog! After that great visit we headed back home. We had to stop by the Pharmacy because the only GLASS refrigerated medicine fell and broke all over the floor. Since it is not a "refill" it is not covered by insurance. The lady was so scared to tell me how much it was. I said I know it is $800. Trust me I asked when I put the order in. It is a medicine he has to have...Lesson learned! My sisters are teaching me an organized system to help with all of his medications. Today has been a photoshoot of these ADORABLE cousins!!!!!! Take a sneak peek!!! WARNING: utter cousin cuteness ahead!

One Month Since The Nightmare; One Week Post Transplant

Wow, I cannot believe it has only been a month since the nightmare started. In a month, our son has been to 3 hospitals, diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, gotten a mechanical heart, and a new heart. Whew! It all still has not sunken in and I am not sure when it will. I do know I am forever grateful for the donor and their family. My cousin Paige sent me this and I thought it was so beautiful and well said.

Sunday I got a big surprise! An email with a flight confirmation for my dad, older sister, and my niece Grace! They are coming out next month to see Beckett and I. I have the best family. Their support has been everything to me. I wouldn't have half the strength I do if it wasn't for their love and support. Sunday night we watched some football! We were cheering on a CCHS alumni that plays for the New England Patriots. Beckett must have been a good luck charm because they are going to the Superbowl!

Monday, was Alex's last full day with Beckett. We are going to miss her so much! Today, she got a great picture of Beckett. Scar, mohawk, and drugs...Beckett is already a rockstar! We couldn't stop laughing at this picture.

Yes, Beckett is being weaned from the sedation drugs, but is also enjoying them. Everyday he gets better and better! Alex also played barber shop! He looks so handsome and smells so good!

They decided to take out the other two chest tubes! All that is left in Beckett's chest/abdomen area are the pacemaker wires, which they haven't needed to use. Gigi and Alex finally got to hold Beckett!

Tuesday, the day I had been dreading has finally came. Alex and I got up early and headed to the hospital, while my mom stayed to do laundry. I let Al hold Beckett as much as she wanted since she was leaving. I drove her to the airport. I hate saying good bye and watching my family go back home. It is the worst. Knowing how sad I was, my sister let me in on a surprise...she is coming back when my dad, older sister, and Grace come out! I always knew what an awesome aunt she was, but I also got to witness what an awesome nurse she is. Thank you for everything Alex! Love you! Meanwhile, back at the hospital my mom called to say that Beckett broke out in the hives. They think one of his immunosuppression medicines gave him the hives. So next time before they give it, they will also give him a dose of Benadryl. I decided to stop by our house on the way back to get some toys for Beckett. I cannot believe how long it has been since I have been home. I was nervous going back. I didn't know how I would emotionally feel. Right before I got home I got word that my Pappou had passed away. So my focus changed to hurry and grab what I needed to get back to my mom and Beckett. I felt so bad that my mom was alone. My grandpa was amazing! He passed his Greek culture on to all of us. Not only will I never jump out of a plane, but he did it at the age of 89! He had a great life. Love and Miss You Pappou! OPA!

Joe landed from Vegas and came right out to the hospital. We said good night to Beckett and headed back to RMH. We were all so tired.

I got woken up early Wednesday morning by Beckett's nurse. My heart was racing, but everything was ok! She wanted me to know that they moved Beckett back into his old room.  Today, was going to be a crazy day...we were going to see Beckett's old heart!  It's hard for me to believe I made a bad heart, yet alone about to hold it! At 12:00, Kara brought Beckett's broken heart to the room. It still had the connections in it from the mechanical heart. It was decompressed so it was smaller than it was in his chest. They had it sliced so you can open it and see inside. His heart walls were so thick leaving very little chambers causing a much lower cardiac output. They do test the heart to see if it will tell what went wrong, but results can take up to a month.

After seeing the heart, Kara sat down with Joe and I to start teaching us all about post transplant. We are even tested over all the information. Beckett had a very cranky day. They think it is a combination of being hungry (he is getting a small amount of feeds via nasojejunal) and weaning him off the drugs. ENT came in to look at his vocal chords since he was intubated for awhile. Beckett's vocal chords look good and are both working properly! After that they brought speech and OT in to do a swallow test. Beckett was so agitated that they decided to come back tomorrow morning to redo it. OT looked at Beckett and noticed he was holding his hands in a tight fist. He has been doing that since he got sick. She showed me exercises to do with his hands to stretch them out. Joe and I have been doing them daily with Beckett. I stayed with Beckett last night. I am starting to feel like a hands on mom again! It is great! I have missed it so much and I realize how lucky we are for something that should have been a very much longer stay is now pretty short!

Today, Beckett woke up so happy! I got so many smiles. They are the best! At rounds, they talked about removing Beckett's PICC line. We noticed yesterday that his arm was super cold compared to his other arm, a little swollen, and it was looking mottled. They decided to keep it in and keep an eye on it. However, Dr. Fricker came in to look at it and he over ruled everyone and wanted it out.  I instantly got scared! He did not want to chance a clot to form. I was very happy with his decision. At rounds, they also said the DC word....Discharge!!! It has been a day I have been dreaming about, but when I heard it my heart dropped and I thought NO I'M NOT READY!!! It's weird but this place in a way has become home. I love seeing the nurses and doctors and I feel safe here. I feel like when I get home it will be like starting all over again. But I can do it! God sent me to nursing school for this!

PT came in this morning to do an assessment with Beckett. They didn't want to do too much since OT was coming in soon to repeat the swallow test. When OT came they had me hold him and he instantly fell asleep in my arms. So they decided to come back when he woke up. Our nurse had to step away for a few minutes, but knew a medicine was about to finish and it would alarm. She told us to hit the nurse call light and another nurse would come in to turn it off. Well, my mom hit a button, an alarm went off, and all of a sudden about 10 people came running into the room in a panic. My mom hit the code blue button on accident!!!! It was pretty embarrassing! OT came back and this time with someone new who held Beckett. They finally got Beckett to take 10 ml by bottle! It took awhile, but he did it! They say he is protecting his airway, which is good and just needed a little encouragement. It is going to take some practice to get used to having liquids in his mouth. It has been a month without liquids. Thanks to a generous friend I got to get a pedicure at a local spa. It was amazing to relax. I just closed my eyes and my mind actually rested. I did not think of anything. I needed that. I picked out a red nail polish called Bastille my heart. Yes, I have a new obsession with hearts. When I came back they have removed his pace maker wires and his PICC line. Beckett seemed so happy! OT came back and this time we tried breast feeding. I was super nervous because I was pretty upset when he wasn't taking the bottle. It is hard to see your child regress instead of moving forward. I do not like pumping as much and couldn't wait to go back to breastfeeding, but was scared he wouldn't want that anymore. By the fourth try he did it!!! I was crying yet again! We did a very small feed since he hasn't had much go into his stomach. So now every other feed with be from the breast.

Dr. Bleiweis, our hero, stopped by to see Beckett.

He cannot believe how amazing Beckett is doing. He even wanted to take Beckett's NJ (now NG) tube out, but the PA said to give it 24 more hours. He then said that Beckett has even beat the textbook odds. He is a true miracle. He went on saying how sick Beckett was, and how scared everyone was for him. It is still SO HARD to swallow those words. How could my baby have been so sick? He was smiling the day he went into respiratory distress....well doesn't matter now because I try to focus on the now and my baby now is doing great!  Sorry for the long post. My days go by quickly with snuggling, changing diapers, and feeding my adorable rockstar. When I look at my son and he smiles at me, I quickly thank everyone who has been with me on this journey because I never knew if I would see that smile again...

The Beast is Back!

Wednesday night, we got to see Beckett at about 10:30 pm. Almost 24 hours after getting the call. Besides having all the tubes back in again, he looked great! His coloring has changed so much with good cardiac output. Right now, you can see his new heart beat under his chest. What a miracle! With the help of family and friends we were able to get a hotel room last night for some much needed rest. The Ronald McDonald House is great, but there is only 2 twin beds and my sister has been sleeping on a cot.

Overnight and throughout the next day they were once again having issues sedating the beast. The goal of that day was to work on extubation. Beckett was not a happy camper having all the tubes back in. He would go from 0 to 60 with agitation. This child was on so much sedation meds but you would never know! They were thinking extubation tomorrow (Friday), but he was so agitated with the vent and everything else looked great that they decided to take it out that afternoon. Woo hoo! Beckett was happy to have it out, but also didn't like the high flow nasal cannula. He started to take his pacifier again but had problems keeping it in. We all kept taking turns being on pacifier duty.

Alex decided to stay with him and help the nurse out since he needed full on attention to be calmed down. I cannot thank my sister for all of her help. She is truly an amazing nurse and aunt. We don't want her to leave! I relieved her early this morning so she could go get some sleep because she was up all night with the beast. When I walked into the room, they had switched his nasal cannula to a lower flow and Beckett already seemed way more comfortable. The nurse (she rocks) had him sitting up more, which he seemed to love! At rounds, they said everything still looks great. Goal is to start weaning everything and start feeds. So at 2 they took out Beckett's intrathoracic lines, which connected to his heart and measured the right and left atrium filling pressures. They also took one chest tube out and his foley. During all that we all went out to dinner at Outback (so daddy could have a steak) thanks to the gift cards people have sent us! Once we got back to the hospital, Beckett was sleeping. The nurse figured out a way to keep Beckett's pacifier in while sleeping. The blanket is tightly wrapped keeping the pacifier in. He slept great. Look at his little non skid hospital socks!!!

She told me once he wakes up, you can hold him....wait WHAT?!?!?! I started to cry. Of course Beckett slept the longest he had in awhile. But his night nurse made it happen!!! It took 3 nurses (his nurse, charge nurse and nurse Aunt Alex) and about 15 minutes of preparing him just for me to hold him!  I cried as he was being put into my arms. It was better than the day he was born. I held him for two hours. He was just as happy as I was being in my arms.

This was the best Saturday night of my life. I waited a very long whirlwind 25 days to hold him again. He is just the sweetest and cutest! I love him so much and so thankful my baby was saved. A day has not gone by that I have not thought of his donor family, our new family whether we meet or not. Once we put Beckett back into bed, I saw that his belly looked distended, but it was still felt soft. They did an x-ray around 1:30 and just like they expected it was full of air. Thank goodness! Good night everyone from my resting peaceful angel!

                                                                      Much Love,
                                                             Joe, Taylor, and Beckett

The Call

Yesterday, Joe (my rock) got here early in the morning. We waited for rounds, which was another good report. The doctors started weaning more things and started new medications. I, of course, asked when they thought I could hold him. They thought in a couple of days!!! After rounds, Joe and I went to workout, Joe gave me a great routine. Boy, am I sore today! We then picked up auntie nurse Alex from the Ronald McDonald House. Alex had tons of mail to give me. She said the lady at the front desk has never seen a guest receive so much mail! The support is truly amazing! In the afternoon, Beckett amazed us by taking his pacifier again!!!!

I cried because I was so proud of Beckett's return to sucking the pacifier! Once Joe left for work my mom, sister, and I hung out with Beckett all night watching him suck! Since my sister Alex slept in this morning before her morning run,  she decided to stay over with Beckett since he had a new night nurse. It has been incredible having her here and all the nurses and docs love having her here too! She is a Cardiac ICU nurse in Chicago at Lurie's Children Hospital. She has been such a HUGE help! She is great with Beckett and you can tell Beckett loves her. However, Alex didn't have any clothes with her, so my mom and her decided to drive to the Ronald McDonald house to get stuff, while I stayed with Beckett. Then they both would drive back to the hospital and Alex and I would swap. As soon as those two left my phone rings,  it was Kara, our transplant coordinator. I had a feeling it was "the call" when I saw Kara's name, because it was 10:38 PM. The convo went like this:

Kara: What cha doing?

Me: Hanging out in Beckett's room.

Kara: Well you might want to stay there because we think we found a heart!

Me: Bawling...Really?!?!? But they wanted to wait 2 weeks after the Berlin...

Kara: They are all for it!

This call changed our lives, but most importantly our son's life. A wave of emotions hit me from receiving "the call". Is this for real? OMG I'm so nervous...We barely waited. I called Joe at work and told him. I tried calling my mom and sister, but both of them had their ringers off. I finally got a hold of my mom and she want crazy and said "we are coming back!" Then I called my dad, who was in shock and my older sister Kristi was crying also. At this point I was shaking. I instantly thought of the donor family who has given us this gift of life. Just like I don't know why this happened to Beckett, I don't know why this family had to lose their child. However, I hope  the donor family finds peace knowing a part of their child lives on in my child. No one really slept last night. This morning all the nurses, doctors, and PA's were cheering when they heard the amazing news! They prepped Becket all morning for his BIG day. Joe and I walked down with Beckett around 10:40 am. Beckett screamed and cried the whole way down to the OR.  I hope that is the last time we will be doing that walk with our boy! We said our good byes to our sweet precious son. And now the waiting begins...

We got word at 1:57 that they opened his chest. Then at 2:20 Kara text me saying the heart visual looks great! They are taking the new heart and bringing it to Beckett! At 3:26 we were told that the heart should be here around 4-4:30. Kara also told us where we could go outside and see them bring the new heart in. At 4:03 Kara text that they were going to land in 15 minutes, then by ambulance the new heart will arrive 5-11 minutes after. At 4:17 they landed!!! So Joe, Alex, and I went outside to watch Beckett's new heart arrive. While outside the three transplant coordinators joined us to watch the arrival. We could hear the sirens get closer and closer. Then the ambulance arrived and out came the surgeon's assistant pulling a cooler that carried Beckett's new heart. It was priceless to see.

At 5:11 we got word that the heart was going in nicely, with no issues. At 6:19 I got a text it's beating!!!! I cannot explain what it was like reading these words. A generous donor and this amazing team here have saved my son's life.  Dr. Fricker came by to tell us that the heart looked great and the surgeon was determining to close the chest or leave it open. Finally, our hero, Dr. Bleiweis came up to talk to us about how surgery went. First he said, your son was born on my youngest son's birthday and now his heart day is on my other son's birthday. Then he preceded to say that he could not be happier how today went. He said this heart looked like it was made for Beckett. How amazing is this? They were able to close his chest. He says it truly could not have gone any better. I feel like we are in a dream! At first I could not believe my son was so severely sick with heart failure, now I cannot believe how quickly and perfectly he has been saved. We still have a road ahead of us, but coming home is so much closer than yesterday! I cannot thank God enough for Beckett's donor, his team here at Shands, all of his cheerleaders and prayer warriors! We cannot wait to see our rockstar!!! We also cannot wait for our beds. It has been quite the ongoing 24 hours! (hence how I look in the pic)

To my Sweet Beckett,
Happy Heart Day! I cannot wait until the day you are old enough to tell you of this tale of a true fighter. I cannot wait for you to meet the world! I cannot wait for you to live happily and comfortable now. I hope your new heart takes you on incredible journeys. I hope it gets filled with love, joy, and thankfulness. I hope you never take a day for granted. I hope you will know that I never left your side and that I never will. I hope you know through faith, love, hope, positivity, prayer and strength ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
We Love You More than Life Itself,

Happy 3 Months Beckett!

Hi everyone! We have had some pretty busy days... On Sunday, Beckett got his 3 chest tubes taken out. They say those are very painful, so I am happy those are gone. Once again, he did great. He also got to hang out with some very special visitors. Daddy brought his Papa and two older sisters and I finally got to see Coco after a long 18 days. We were lucky enough to enjoy a nice dinner together knowing Beckett was in good hands with his nurses. I look forward to the day we can all enjoy a meal together at our own home.

The team talked about extuabtion on Monday. I was very excited because Monday was his three month birthday. Beckett was put on the lowest settings on the vent and was tolerating it well. Monday they had a Physical Therapist come in that specializes with the diaphragm muscle. He created this test to examine how well the diaphragm is working to see if patients can tolerate extubation. Beckett's numbers were in the middle. Not great, but not awful. The PA thought he was ready. He was 24 hours in with the lowest vent settings and he was pretty much breathing on his own. However, Beckett's surgeon wanted to wait one more day and he calls the shots around here, which is fine because I fully trust him. I was disappointed a bit because my heart and mind was set on it coming out. I also knew that Beckett was really over the tube down his throat. Yesterday, I saw our transplant cardiologist. They looked at my ultrasounds, but it didn't show much. He said at 20 weeks, there could possibly be the start of something on his left ventricle, but not enough to be a red flag at that time. And since everything checked out at 20 weeks, the ultrasound at 35 weeks didn't really show his heart. So no answers there. In addition, he said the biopsy they took of his heart came back negative for everything they tested. Now we are just waiting to hear if genetics finds anything. There is a chance we may never know what caused this and we will never know why it happened to our sweet Beckett. But that's okay because he is strong and jumping over every hurdle that comes his way! He is truly a rockstar! Speaking of rockstar..channel 6 covered a story about sweet little Caitlyn, Beckett's number one cheerleader. If you did not get to see it, here is the link:

http://www.clickorlando.com/news/local-girl-runs-lemonade-stand-to-help-baby-get-heart-transplant/30660008

It truly melted my heart watching this. I watched it over and over. Thank you so much Caitlyn!

At rounds this morning, Beckett got another great report. They didn't want to change much because they really wanted to extubate him today. They had the PT guy come back for another diaphragm test. While waiting for him to show up, we got word that Caitlyn and Beckett's story was going to be on HLN! Thank goodness we get that channel here. We got to see it twice, so amazing! The PT guy showed up when Beckett was agitated. At first he got really low numbers because Beckett kept holding his breath, but then once he settled down he got a GREAT score!! Yea Becks! So at 2 o'clock today........drum roll......Beckett got extubated!!!!!!!!

He did great! I can see his face again! He is so stinking cute! And he got his hands free!! He has had his arms up just how he likes it ever since they were out of the restraints. AND I heard him cry!!!! It is very weak like a little birdie, but it was amazing to hear! Even better than the day he was born. I honestly didn't know if I would hear his voice again. It brought tears to my eyes. And daddy is happy because he says his vocal chords are working. We have started to work with him on taking his pacifer like he did before. It will take time though and his throat is pretty sore right now. My mom, sister and I had a nice dinner at Tijuana Flats (Thanks PB)! I couldn't wait to get back to my Beckett and just stare at him some more! When we came back to his room his night nurse said they are going to take one of his central lines out! Another thing soon to be gone! Then next will be his arterial line. I think then I can hold my son again!!!!! Agh can I say that again?!?! I might be holding my son again very soon!!!!!

All of this good news could not be possible without all of you. Every text, call, fb post, fb pm, blog comment, card, gifts, gift cards, love, positive thoughts and most importantly prayers. It's still a long road ahead of us. I can only take a day at a time and today was a GREAT day! This week OT and PT will be coming in and helping Beckett. Their goals will be feedings and muscle strength since he has been lying in bed for 3 weeks. Wish us luck! Oh, 1 week left for t shirts if you would like a #teambeckett shirt.

Best Muffin Basket Ever!

Beckett had a great night. When we saw him this morning, we were blown away. He looked so good! His coloring and alertness...my Beckett is back! In rounds this morning Beckett's team was so proud of him! They were happy to announce that he has reached every goal that have set so far. I was cheering and grinning from ear to ear! He has a pretty big amazing team. It consists of Doctors (ICU, Cardiologist, Transplant), Surgeons, PAs, NPs, respiratory, and nurses. So today's plan was to lower/get rid of the two medicines he has to be off of to extubate and start lowering the vent controls. He is off one of the two medicines! Tonight's plan is to wean off the second one and keep lowering the vent settings. I am so proud of you lil man and so proud to be your mommy!

Beckett had two very important visitors today! Auntie Alex and cousin Jordan! I was so excited to see them both! I send a HUGE THANK YOU to these people...
Not only did they help send my sister here, they sent her with 2 extra luggage pieces filled with gifts for Beckett and I. We are so blown away and thankful for thinking of us. We went out to lunch and then hung out with Becks for the rest of the day/night! We finally decorated Beckett's room and it looks sooo good! His room is filled with love from all over the United States! Here are some pics...

That Olaf has a guardian angel pin on him and Duffy has one of my Grandpa's medals on him. I feel so honored that Beckett got that! I actually had a "fun" day. Beckett looks good, part of my family is together and my sister made me laugh and brought me good Chicago snacks and treats! Alex is staying with Beckett tonight to watch over his continuing weaning and to let me try to have a good night sleep. Thanks Al! Tomorrow I'll see Joe, Papa, Mya, McKenna, and COCO!!!!!!

One more shout out to this amazing little girl. I hope Beckett grows up to have a heart like yours. She has given Beckett her allowance  and today she set up a lemonade stand! She is a sweetheart! I can't wait for Beckett to meet her! How cute is she?!?!

Praying for another great night as they continue to wean and for a successful extubation in the next couple of days. Each day is a day closer to me holding him and him receiving the gift of life! Thank you God and all of you for your prayers, positive thoughts, and good juju that you have sent our way. It is definitely helping us to stay strong!

Much Love,
Joe, Taylor, and Beckett

Beckett's Chest is Closed!!!

Hi Everyone! Today, started with a nightmare. I woke up at 2 am from a nightmare about Beckett. I seem to get them nightly and I hate them. I sleep with fear of my phone ringing and it being the hospital. No news is good news! I did wake up to an unbelievable more than generous donation from a fellow Alpha Phi sister who I have never met. However, I hope Beckett and I can meet her once he is all better. Thank you! AOE Beckett this morning looked really loopy and dehydrated. I saw our surgeon and he said he already lowered his sedation and has fluids going back in him. At rounds, everyone was happy with his night. Chest closure happened around one. It was pretty amazing how they turned his room into a little OR. We waited anxiously in our own little waiting room that we stay in daily. The surgeon came in and said everything went great. They cleaned him out a bit and closed his chest with a "glue." We had to wait another 30-45 minutes till we could see him. When we saw him we could not believe how great he looked! He looked so much better than this morning! He has a pretty gnarley scar, which I am sure he will love to show off being a boy! All the doctors and nurses keep saying how great he is doing and how great he looks. #proudmommy Here is a picture of my sweet boy and you can see a little of his warrior scar.

I worked out for the first time since giving birth. It felt great! Let's see if it still feels great tomorrow. LOL I want to send my husband a shout out for running the Disney half marathon tomorrow. I am so proud of you and I am so sad we can't be there for you! Eye of the tiger honey! We will be tracking you! I Love You!

I try to focus on the positive road, but it is so hard not to ask "How did we get here?" everyday. Especially when we miss something that has been planned for months. But dwelling on that is not going to help with getting out of here! So onto the next step, which is weaning off the vent and his drips. It is so ironic because I want all of that gone, but I am so nervous taking it away! I am so happy and excited for Beckett's Aunt Alex and cousin Jordan to come tomorrow. Nurse Aunt Alex came at the best time to be by his side and mine. I cannot wait to hug them both!

Leaving Beckett at night is so hard. However, every night brings me comfort and peace reading the cards we receive and packages. I am so touched and thankful for all the cards and gifts. People I haven't seen for years have reached out and it is so sweet. I received a very special package from my friends in Vegas! Beckett's first trip was going to be Vegas this month. We were planning on seeing my best dancer friend, my best friend since 13, and my best friend from high school. We all have babies under the age of 1! I was blown away with their package! I cannot wait to bring the blanket to him tomorrow! Thank you Jacqueline and Kim! And thank you Peridot Sweets for the cutest cookies ever!!!!

A quick update on some fellow patients. Oliver is still doing well. The baby with the tumor on the abdomen had surgery this morning and the tumor was benign!!! Great news! Thank you for adding them to your prayers. This is another time that we need lots of prayers for Beckett. This weaning process is scary and now they have to find a balance of blood thinner medications. They need his blood to be thin enough not to clot with his VAD, but not enough to cause a bleed somewhere esp. not in the brain!!! And of course always, the gift of a new heart and healing for the giver.

Much Love,
Joe, Taylor, and Beckett
